El Hospital de Guadalajara ha realizado dos intervenciones de este tipo con éxito y en las próximas semanas tiene programadas otras dos
El consejero de Sanidad y Asuntos Sociales del Gobierno de Castilla-La Mancha, José Ignacio Echániz, ha felicitado al servicio de Oftalmología del Hospital Universitario de Guadalajara por realizar con éxito dos intervenciones de una técnica pionera en España, dirigida a corregir la degeneración macular.
Echániz ha señalado que especialistas como el jefe de servicio de Oftalmología de este centro, Bernardo Fernández de Arévalo, que ha introducido esta técnica desarrollada en Italia y Bélgica, “hacen avanzar la Medicina, lo que se traduce en que los pacientes reciben una asistencia sanitaria de gran nivel, y para mi es una satisfacción contar con ellos en Castilla-La Mancha”.
En esta misma línea, el consejero de Sanidad y Asuntos Sociales ha recordado que “se trata de una cirugía, pionera en España, con la que el Hospital de Guadalajara, y por tanto la Sanidad de Castilla-La Mancha, demuestra que está a la vanguardia de procedimientos innovadores con la finalidad de ofrecer la mejor calidad asistencial a nuestros pacientes”.
Esta nueva técnica es aplicable en casos muy concretos de la degeneración macular, con ceguera bilateral, en los que el paciente presenta unas condiciones muy concretas. En la actualidad, ha explicado el doctor Fernández de Arévalo “esta patología se aborda de forma general a través de inyecciones intraoculares; en los casos en que no se consigue evitar la incapacidad visual pese al tratamiento, desde 2005 realizamos una técnica conocida como traslocación, que consiste en despegar toda la retina y moverla dejando la zona central de la visión fuera de la parte estropeada”.
Ahora, ha detallado el especialista, “con esta nueva técnica denominada trasplante del epitelio pigmentario de la retina, en vez de mover toda la retina, cogemos un segmento sano de epitelio de la periferia del ojo y lo trasplantamos directamente a la zona dañada, que es la zona central de la visión con dos intervenciones”. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento “demuestran que el 25 por ciento de las personas que se han sometido a esta técnica vuelven a leer y muchos recuperan parte de la visión”.
El titular de Sanidad y Asuntos Sociales ha recalcado el “buen trabajo realizado por los profesionales sanitarios de la región”, a lo que ha añadido que “gracias a su esfuerzo y su profesionalidad, los pacientes de la región reciben la mejor asistencia sanitaria”.
Degeneración macular
La degeneración macular asociada a la edad es una enfermedad que afecta a la visión central clara que se necesita para realizar las actividades en las que hay que ver directamente hacia delante, como la lectura, la costura o conducir. Afecta a la mácula, la parte del ojo que permite ver los detalles pequeños. Es la causa principal de la pérdida de visión irreversible en mayores de 60 años en países desarrollados.
En el 85 por ciento de los casos, la degeneración macular relacionada con la edad se denomina seca y avanza lentamente con pérdidas leves y lentas de la visión. En otros casos, el 15 por ciento, se transforma en la variedad húmeda y progresa más rápidamente, dejando ciego al paciente. Es muy importante el diagnóstico precoz para asegurar la eficacia del tratamiento.
