El proyecto Retriever de la consultora tecnológica Quality Objects, en el marco de I+D del plan Avanza2 del Ministerio de Industria, tiene como objetivo el desarrollo de un prototipo de gafas inteligentes auditivas (dotadas con sensores y tecnología de realidad aumentada) para personas con visibilidad reducida o nula que complementaría al bastón o al perro guía que normalmente utilizan en su día a día, ayudándoles a convertir los obstáculos en sonidos tridimensionales que les guían para evitarlos y mejorar su integración.

Estas gafas aportan a las personas con discapacidad visual información sonora (mediante tonos y frecuencias) de su entorno cercano y las barreras que dificultan su integración total con el mismo, como escaleras y escalones, puertas y obstáculos y objetos de todo tipo, con la innovación de que además incorporan un botón de emergencia (24×7) que pueden utilizar fácilmente en caso de desorientación o peligro.

Estas lentes inteligentes se conectan a un smarphone con Android (en breve también estará disponible para iPhone) que integra señales emitidas por diferentes sensores de proximidad y las traduce en indicaciones de orientación y direccionalidad (con sistema de navegación GPS sobre realidad aumentada auditiva), para que el usuario acceda a itinerarios guiados sonoros, perceptibles por personas con discapacidad visual a través de auriculares y vibradores.

El usuario cuenta así con información para evitar, por ejemplo, ramas a la altura de la cabeza, evitar obstáculos como farolas o árboles, caminar en paralelo a una pared, etc. y andar sin tener que utilizar el bastón.

El funcionamiento del botón de emergencia es igualmente sencillo, ya que basta pulsarlo durante tres segundos para que comunique con el centro de asistencia (24×7) que llamará al teléfono para darle la ayuda necesaria o contactar directamente con los servicios de emergencia.

Todavía como prototipo, estas gafas han sido ya probadas con éxito en varias asociaciones de invidentes, como Fundación Retina España, Asociación de Miopía Magna (Amires) o la Asociación Retina Asturias, y se prevé que comenzarán a comercializarse en mayo de 2014 a un precio aproximado de 199 euros.
