Investigadoras de la Universidad de Alicante que han obtenido esta línea celular que permitirá evaluar la eficacia de los fármacos en el tratamiento de las enfermedades neurodegenerativas de la retina/EFE/Morell
La investigación sobre las distintas patologías oculares centra sus esfuerzos en el mantenimiento de la salud de la retina, tejido neural cuyo buen funcionamiento es crucial para la visión, a través del trasplante de células madre, la terapia génica o los fármacos.

Dentro de la vertiente de las células madre, investigadores de las universidades de Alicante y Valencia han obtenido una nueva línea celular de retina que se puede usar para evaluar la eficacia clínica de fármacos en el tratamiento de enfermedades neurodegenerativas de la retina.

Se trata de una línea celular inmortal, denominada MU-PH 1, que ha sido aislada de un cultivo de células de Müller de retinas de ratones adultos.

Esta nueva línea se va a emplear en estudios básicos -no para hacer terapias con humanos- con la finalidad de cribar fármacos que pueden ser neuroprotectores (capaces de evitar o ralentizar la muerte celular que desemboca en ceguera).

El coordinador del grupo de investigación Neurobiología del Sistema Visual y Terapia de Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas de la Retina de la Universidad de Alicante, el doctor Nicolás Cuenca, señala, en una entrevista con Efe, que las células MU-PH 1 son un buen modelo in vitro para el análisis de la función de las células fotosensibles de la retina: los fotorreceptores (conos y bastones).

Cuenca, que lleva desde 1984 trabajando en el campo de la retina, ha destacado que la importancia de esta novedosa línea celular radica en que posee características de fotorreceptores, es decir, las célula MU-PH1 son capaces de responder a estímulos luminosos, por lo que también se podría emplear en un futuro como células madre para poder trasplantarlas en roedores que se van a quedar ciegos.

Dicha cualidad abre la posibilidad de que esas células madre, una vez trasplantadas, se puedan transformar en fotorreceptores y reemplazar los conos y bastones dañados, ha apuntado.

“Eso nos serviría para estudiar los mecanismos” que determinarían “en qué condiciones las células madre podrían ser útiles, cuál sería el número de células que hay que trasplantar y si conectan o no con el resto de la retina”, ha revelado Cuenca.

No obstante, este científico insiste en la necesidad de no crear “falsas esperanzas” entre los pacientes porque aún queda mucho camino por recorrer y aboga por seguir invirtiendo en este ámbito del conocimiento.

Debido a su experiencia adquirida y a las técnicas empleadas, el equipo que dirige Cuenca ha cosechado un prestigio internacional, que se traduce en proyectos de investigación desarrollados con universidades de otros países, principalmente de EEUU y Canadá.
