Alrededor de un millón de personas padecen de baja visión en España, una cifra que ha aumentado en los últimos años debido al envejecimiento de la población. La lupa electrónica, a diferencia de una lupa convencional, consigue un mayor aumento y un mayor campo de visión, gracias a la pantalla de 3,5 pulgadas, que permite obtener una imagen nítida y sin aberraciones.

Otra de las ayudas básicas para las personas con baja visión es el telescopio 1.9X enfocable monocular montado en gafa adaptada, una ayuda visual que permite a los pacientes con baja visión leve (agudeza visual entre 0.25 y 0.45), ver la televisión, leer o realizar tareas de media distancia. Asimismo, en determinados casos, también se puede recomendar la utilización de un microscopio, que es un sistema óptico que permite al paciente acercarse mucho los objetos y enfocarlos a poca distancia. Esta ayuda va montada en una gafa y, a diferencia de la lupa convencional, con ella se obtiene mucho más campo de visión y mucha más nitidez, consiguiendo además, mantener las dos manos libres.

Por último, también es habitual recomendar filtros selectivos, lentes que protegen 100% de los rayos nocivos del sol sin limitar la calidad de visión y la transmitancia de la lente. De esta forma, un paciente que tiene una discapacidad visual puede usar una lente de máxima protección sin penalizar su agudeza visual lo que permite, en algunos casos, mejorar valores de sensibilidad al contraste.
