Rafael Martinez Costa, oftalmólogo y presidente de la Sociedad Valenciana de Oftalmología y tesorero del Comité Ejecutivo de la EBO. Es el primer especialista español que forma parte de la directiva de la prestigiosa European Board of Oftalmology, que depende de la Unión Europea de Medicina Especializada. Será uno de los vigías de la homologación de títulos en el viejo continente.
Rafael Martinez Costa (Valencia-1958) se inclinó hacia la Oftalmología por afinidad a su abuelo, de quien disfruta viéndole manejar el instrumental. Aunque su padre era pediatra, el actualpresidente de la Sociedad Valenciana de Oftalmología prefirió los ojos. Hoy mantiene el linaje familiar al atender los problemas oculares de los niñosen el hospital la Fé. Martínez-Costa, que además es profesor asociado, es el primer especialista sociado que forma parte del comité Ejecutivo del European Board of Oftalmology (Consejo Europeo de Oftalmología en Castellano) que le eligió tras observar que su trabajo como delegado nacional de la Sociedad Española en la institución europea desde 2009 tenía muy buena proyeccción internacional.
¿Cómo se ve la salud ocular de los españoles desde esa institución europea?
Cuando llegué a París a trabajar en el hospital intercomunal me dí cuenta de que los médicos en Europa no son mejores que nosotros pero[sociallocker id=»1090″] sí tenian más medios que nosotros. Un aparato para estudiar el fondo del ojo, allí era la vedette y aquí tardó dos años en llegar.
A pesar de la proximidad de Europa, parece ser que los oftalmólogos españoles sieten más tirón hacia Estados Unidos.
Si, los especialistas españoles estamos más proyectados hacia Estados Unidos que hacia Europa. Llama mucho la atención, que en el congreso americano de oftalmología siempre hay un grupo español que es uno de los más fuertes en número de asistentes. De hecho, somos más españoles que franceses en la Academia Americana y eso se puede atribuir a que somos más inquietosy viajeros.
¿Nuestros ojos gozan de buena salud?
Los españoles estamos en el estándares europeos. Otra cosa es que haya financiación. La cualificación en los hospitales nacionales es muy alta, no solo en oftalmología sino en muchas otras especialidades. Otra cosa es que falle la logística, pero aún así con el sueldo reducido la gente está entregada al cien por cien.
¿Cuidamos nuestros ojos?
En España todavía no hay conciencia de que se tiene que hacer prevención. Que hay que prevenir antes que lamentarlo. Hay que revisarse la retina, se tarda en llevar a los niños al oftalmólogo.
¿Los ojos evjecen antes?
Una persona que ha cumplido los 40 tiene que mirarse la tensión ocular porque a partir de esa edad aparecen glaucomas y eso lleva a perder la visión de una forma lenta y peligrosa. Las personas con diabetes deben mirarse el fondo de ojo para controlarse. No cuidarse la vista es un fallo muy grande de la población.
¿Los ciegos verán?
Se está estudiando de que puedan ver, se están fabricando unos microchips para colocar en la retina…pero todavía es ciencia-ficción. Pero es cierto que hay muchas enfermedadesque abocaban a la ceguera y ahora se están evitando.
¿La oftalmología ha evolucionado mucho?
En 30 años el progreso ha sido brutal. Antes era incondedible que una persona con una catarata pudiera operarse y condujera un autobús y ahora si y además puede cumplir los requerimientos legales para hacerlo.
2013 es su año, acaba de ingresar en la Real Academia de Medicina y se ha convetido en el primer español que forma parte del Comité Ejecutivo del Consejo Europeo de Oftalmología.
Si, el European Board of Oftalmology(EBO) nació en Londres en 1992 con representantes de 11 paises por recomendación de la Unión Europea de Medicina Especializada porque se pensaba que era la mejor manera de arreglar las especialidades médicas era a través de los comités.
¿Qué representa para usted formar parte de esta ejecutiva?
Un honor y un reto. Porque es la más alta representación de la especialidad a nivel europeo. De hecho a mi me eligieron porque como presidente de la Asociación Valenciana sería un buen candidato.
¿Qué fines persigue esta institución?
Garantizar los estándares más altos en la atención en Oftalmología y asegurar que la formación de los especialistas se realice al más alto nivel.Otro de los objetivos es poner en marcha mecanismos para la libre circulación de oftalmólogos en la UE, verificar el contenido y la calidad de la formación y garantizar el intercambio de médicosresidentes(MIR) y formadores.
¿La EBO tiene filtros de calidad?
Si, hay un examen, por el que ya han pasado más de 500 especialistas para tener el título europeo que garantiza que el nivel de cualificación es igual en todos los especialistas de la UE. Hay paises como Francia donde es obligatorio.
¿Hay algún hospital español acreditado para intercambio de residentes europeos?
No hay ninguno y eso es uno de los objetivos que me planteo, por que se aprende mucho visitando otros hospitales y especialistas.
