Un par de lentes, un miniordenador y un microchip implantado bajo la retina. Científicos estadounidenses desarrollaron un ojo biónico que podrá devolver la visión a personas ciegas por enfermedades degenerativas de la retina, sin necesidad de someterse a operaciones arriesgadas ni instalar cables.
Científicos de la Universidad de Stanford, en California (EE. UU.), publicaron el informe en la revista ‘Nature Photonics’, donde describen el dispositivo como un implante de retina, un microchip que contiene píxeles fotovoltaicos.
El sistema funciona de forma similar a un panel solar microscópico y se coloca en la parte posterior del ojo. Una minúscula cámara de video instalada graba lo que está ocurriendo ante los ojos de una persona, y genera rayos de luz casi infrarroja en el chip colocado en la retina.
Después el implante convierte la luz en energía eléctrica y estimula las neuronas de la retina, enviando la información al cerebro.
Ventajas
Los investigadores aseguran que su método podría significar un paso hacia la «eliminación de la necesidad de electrónica compleja y cableada».
Además, el hecho de que el ojo biónico elimine los aparatosos cables, baterías y antenas de los primeros prototipos, convierte al dispositivo en un sistema mucho más ligero y fácil de implantar.
Por otra parte, cada una de las células fotovoltaicas es estimulada de forma individual, por lo que se espera conseguir una imagen con mayor resolución que cualquier otro dispositivo ensayado.
No experimentado
Por el momento este nuevo ojo biónico solo se ha probado en el laboratorio, con las retinas de ratas a las que se les habían destruido los fotorreceptores del ojo, como ocurre en las personas que pierden la visión por una retinosis. El siguiente paso será ensayar el implante ‘milagroso’ en humanos.
